How to Build a Gaming Setup on a Budget

There's a whole industry trying to convince you that you need a $2,000 setup to be a real gamer. It's not true. A great gaming setup is about comfort, function, and making the most of what you have, not about how much you spent. I've built setups on a tight budget, and here's what actually matters and what's a waste of money.

Start with what you already have

Before you buy anything, look at what you've got. A laptop or a desktop that runs your games is the foundation. If it works, you don't need a new one. The biggest mistake is buying a new computer when your current one is fine. Spend your money on the things that actually improve your experience, not on a shiny new box.

Your mouse and keyboard matter more than you think

If you're going to spend money on anything, spend it on a decent mouse and keyboard. A cheap mouse that's uncomfortable will hurt your hand, and a bad keyboard will slow you down. You don't need the most expensive gear, but you do need gear that feels good. A comfortable mouse and a keyboard with good keys will make a bigger difference than a fancy monitor.

And here's a tip: you don't need a gaming mouse with a million buttons. A simple, comfortable mouse with a good sensor is all you need. The buttons you'll never use are just a waste of money.

Don't overpay for a monitor

Monitors are where people overspend. You don't need a 4K monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate to enjoy games. A good 1080p monitor with a decent refresh rate is plenty for most people. Comfort is the real upgrade

You don't need a gaming chair with racing stripes. A comfortable office chair is often better and cheaper. And make sure your desk is the right height so you're not hunched over.

Don't buy everything at once

You don't need to build your whole setup in one day. Start with the essentials, and add things as you can afford them. A mouse, a keyboard, a comfortable chair. Then add a monitor, then a better desk. Building a setup over time is easier on your wallet, and it means you can buy better things when you do buy.
