Agar.io is one of the most popular browser games ever made, and it looks deceptively simple. You're a blob, you eat smaller blobs, and you avoid bigger ones. But anyone who's played it knows there's real strategy. Growing big is easy, staying alive when you're big is the hard part. Here's how to actually get good at Agar.io.

Start by eating, not by hunting

New players make the mistake of hunting other blobs right away. That's backwards. At the start, you're small, and small blobs are food for everyone. Your first job is to eat the little pellets and grow. Don't chase other players until you're big enough to actually win the fight. The pellets are safe food, and they're everywhere. Eat them, grow, and then start looking for targets.

Split only when it's worth it

Splitting is the most powerful move in Agar.io, and the most dangerous. When you split, you double your speed, but you also split your mass, which makes you vulnerable. Split when you're chasing a smaller blob you can catch, or when you're trying to escape a bigger one. Don't split just to split. A split that doesn't get you a kill is a split that makes you a target.

Use the edges to your advantage

The edges of the map are your friend. When you're being chased, head for the edge. The bigger blob chasing you has to slow down to turn, and the edge gives you a chance to escape. You can also use the edge to trap smaller blobs. If you can push a smaller blob into the corner, it has nowhere to go, and you can eat it.

Know when to run

The most important skill in Agar.io is knowing when to run. If a bigger blob is coming at you, don't try to fight it. You'll lose. Run. Use your speed, use the edges, and get away. There's no shame in running, because a blob that runs lives to grow another day. A blob that fights a bigger blob is just a meal.
