How to Play Temple Run 2: Run Further, Die Less

Temple Run 2 looks simple: run, turn, jump, slide. But anyone who has actually played it knows the game gets chaotic fast. The track throws turns, gaps, and swinging obstacles at you in quick succession, and if you're just reacting, you're already behind. The good news is that the game is built on patterns, and once you learn them, you can run for a very long time.

Turn before you think you need to

The biggest mistake new players make is turning too late. The track in Temple Run 2 is full of sharp corners, and if you wait until you see the turn to swipe, you've already missed it. Swipe a beat early. Your character will turn smoothly, and you'll have time to line up the next obstacle. It feels like you're turning into a wall at first, but the game is forgiving about early turns and brutal about late ones.

Jump and slide are not the same move

This sounds obvious, but a lot of players mix them up under pressure. A low barrier means slide. A gap or a low wall means jump. When the track gets fast, your brain wants to do the same thing every time, and that's how you clip a barrier you should have slid under. Take a breath and read the obstacle before you move. One clean move beats three panicked ones.

Use the boosters at the right moment

Boosters and power-ups are tempting to use the second you grab them, but that's a waste. Save a boost for a long straight stretch where you can actually build speed without hitting something. And if you're chasing a high score, save your coins for the magnet and the shield. The shield especially is a lifesaver, because it lets you survive a hit that would normally end your run.

Coins are a trap if you chase them

Coins are laid out in lines, and those lines usually follow a safe path. Follow the coins and you're usually following a safe route. But the moment you swerve off the path to grab a coin in a dangerous lane, you're gambling your run for a few points. It's rarely worth it. Grab what's on your way and keep moving. Surviving longer always beats a few extra coins.

Pro tip: The double-jump and super-jump power-ups stack. If you grab both, you can clear obstacles that would normally end your run, so prioritize them when they appear.

Don't play on autopilot

Here's the thing nobody tells you: Temple Run 2 punishes autopilot. The game is designed to lull you into a rhythm and then throw a pattern change at you. If you're running on muscle memory alone, you'll die to the first change. Stay present. Read the track a few tiles ahead, and you'll catch the pattern changes before they catch you.

Temple Run 2 is a game of reading ahead and staying calm. Turn early, read your obstacles, save your boosters, and don't chase coins. Do that, and your runs will get longer than you thought possible.
