Tetris: How to Get a High Score and Master the Stack
Tetris is one of those games that everyone has played and almost nobody has actually learned. You drop blocks, you clear lines, and then the game gets faster and you lose. But there's a real skill to it, and once you understand how the game works, you can play for a very long time. Here's what I've learned from years of playing.
It's a game of planning, not reaction
The biggest mistake new players make is treating Tetris like a reaction game. It isn't. The pieces fall slowly enough that you have time to think, and the players who score high are the ones who plan ahead. When a piece appears, don't just drop it. Look at your stack, figure out where it fits, and think about what you want to do next.
The game rewards players who keep their stack flat. A flat stack is easy to build on, and it gives you room to work. A messy stack with holes is a death sentence, because you can't fill the holes and the game gets faster.
Keep your stack flat
This is the single most important habit. Try to keep the top of your stack as flat as possible. Don't leave single-block holes, because you'll never fill them. Don't build a tower in the middle, because it'll block everything. Keep the surface even, and you'll always have a place to put the next piece.
If you have to make a choice, always choose the move that keeps the stack flattest. It's not always the move that clears a line, but it's the move that keeps you alive.
Learn the pieces
Every piece has a best way to place it. The I piece is the only one that can clear four lines at once, so save it for when you can use it. The O piece is a square, and it's the easiest to place. The S and Z pieces are the tricky ones, and they're the ones that cause the most problems. Learn how each piece fits, and you'll stop making mistakes.
How scoring works
If you want a high score, you need to understand the scoring. Clearing one line at a time is fine, but clearing multiple lines at once is where the points are. A Tetris, which is four lines at once, is worth a huge amount. So the strategy is to build up your stack and then drop an I piece to clear four lines at once.
